PERSONAL PROFILE

By Design is a professional architectural practice located in Yarmouth, Maine. Its sole proprietor, Bruce Butler, provides personal attention and hands-on oversight to clients throughout the design and building process.

Mr. Butler has practiced architecture for twenty-five years, nine in Boston and sixteen in Maine. During that time, he has been involved with a diverse range of commercial and institutional projects, including conversion of historic landmark buildings in Boston's downtown, a ski resort in Vermont, branch banks, office buildings, and elementary schools.

Throughout his career, he has taken a special interest in residential design including site
selection, new homes, kitchen renovations, and porch, family room, and garage additions.

Bruce is looking for clients who appreciate good design. His goal is to create houses that
reflect the individuality of his clients and are a joy to live in.

"My designs are site-specific in that they establish a contextual dialogue with surrounding
buildings, preserve unique natural settings and views, respect the constraints of water or ledge,
and take advantage of opportunities for energy efficiency.

As well as being designed contextually from the outside in, the interior volumes express the
daily and seasonal rhythms of their occupants based on solar orientation, finishes, and the
desire for privacy or togetherness."
